The Packard Hawk is one of the rarest of birds. Built by Studebaker/Packard
Corporation in South Bend, it was the last production car to carry the
Packard Name. It was also the fastest production Packard ever built. Only
588 of these cars were made. It is estimated that about 200 have survived.
The owner of this page maintains a list of surviving cars. That is a very
high survival rate and emphasizes how the owners must have felt about these
cars. My car was sold initially to a James B. Crane in Longmeadow, Mass.
It was sold by the James C. Byrnes Co. a Studebaker/Packard dealer in Springfield,
Mass. It later was taken to FL where it spent most of its life. At some
time it had been partially restored but with a lot of bondo. I purchased
the car in 1999 from a Studebaker collector in NH. The car was shipped
to IL where I had the car soda blasted and then the fun began. After a
two year restoration it is back to its former glory. The Packard Hawk has
a 289 c.i. V8 with a McCulloch supercharger thereby producing about 275
HP. It is fairly peppy auto and a lot of fun. For more information about
these rare autos and other models produced by Studebaker/Packard, go to
the Studebaker Drivers Club Website at www.studebakerdriversclub.com
